I received the Verbatim Acclaim 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 97164 yesterday and I have already copied over all of my important photographs, documents and other important electronic files which I want to keep at hand.

Moving files over to this Hard Drive is rather fast even without the optional Turbo USB software it comes with. I timed that it took about 5 minutes (8:48pm – 8:53pm) to move a folder containing 3.19 GB of data over from my desktop to this Hard Drive.

Moving the same folder of files (3.19 GB of data) from the Hard Drive back to my desktop was quicker and took about 4 minutes (9:03pm – 9:07pm). This is rather nice because I often find the transfer rate of files from desktop to external storage to be much faster than the other way around.

If you are someone who needs to carry around 320 GB of data with you this is a great little device. It’s rather small, and measures to be about 4.5″ x 3″ and 1/2″ thick , it creates hardly any noise (if any), and doesn’t require an external power supply. It does install a driver automatically in a few seconds but no software was needed to be installed manually.

A few concerns I have about its durability and lack of security. Regarding the durability of the case I hopefully I can find a nice cover to keep it in otherwise I worry that something may happen to its case if just tossed into a purse.

However I’m not sure about the hard drive’s security. I currently have a ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive and it comes with software which provides an option for the user to password protect it. If I were to lose the ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive anyone who happened to find it would have to completely re-format it, and thus doing so they end up erasing all data from the ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive before they are able to access it. I may have lost the ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive but no one would be able to access any confidential files I have on it. It is not the case with the Verbatim Acclaim 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 97164.

Last I have a minor complaint about the hard drive and it’s that the outer shell (Piano Black) shows finger prints extremely well.

If I was to make any suggestions it would be to provide the option to password protect the harddrive and to offer the Verbatim Acclaim in a black matte finish as the Verbatim 320 GB USB 2.0 CL N Portable External Hard Drive 97061 (Black Matte Finish) is.

Suggestions I have for anyone purchasing this product would probably be to also purchase a carrying case to protect it.

    A quick breakdown would be:

    Pros

    1. Besides a small driver there isn’t any software to install

    2. Extremely quiet

3.Lot’s of storage in a rather small unit

    Cons:

    1. Case shows any fingerprint

    2. Hard plastic case may not be very sturdy. Maybe best to buy a case to protect it if you plan on using it for travel

    3. Does not come with security software to protect it in the event if you were to lose it and someone was to find it.

  2. I love the size of this drive, it’s just a bit shorter and wider than my hand and my hands are pretty small, which makes it wonderfully portable.

I plugged it into my desktop which is an XP machine and copied 229 gigs of music in about 5.5 hours while I was doing things online. If I hadn’t been multi-tasking it would have been quicker. It did not work with my usb hub. Made an annoying beeping sound when I tried. I plugged it directly into a usb port on the back of my computer and it worked fine. My computer recognized it quickly and it worked very well after that. This is a very very quiet drive. My husband wondered if it was solid state until he actually put his hand on it and could feel it moving.

After I got the music transferred, I plugged the drive into my laptop (Vista) and that worked with no problems at all.

It does show every finger print, and the case might need extra protection in a laptop bag, but it’s a nice little drive and a good deal for it’s low price. I love how slim and sleek it is.

ETA- Since reviewing this, I’ve replaced my xp machine with a Windows 7 desktop. Since this drive was the most recent backup of my music, I pulled it off of here using my new computer and it performed flawlessly.

    UPDATE 8/2010:

I now use my Verbatim drive for everything! My Western Digital(WD) hard drive started making a ticking sound on occasion, and not responding other times. Which of course, makes me really nervous! So I copied everything over to this Verbatim drive, so now all my files are on both. When I need something now, I always use the Verbatim and tend to leave the Western Digital alone.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: I have a WD external hard drive that I use quite often, more then I ever would have expected. It helps to seamlessly move between my two computers, both PC, one with vista and the other XP. The verbatim works just as well and is a bit more affordable.

Not only is this hard drive attractive, but it’s smaller then my WD HD. It will slip into your pocket, and is comparable in size to my iphone. The piano black color is sleek and will match anything. Set up was non-existent. I just plugged it in via USB and dropped my music on it. The only thing I would change is to make the USB cord a bit longer, but for now it will do just fine.

I recently decided I also wanted to backup all my ipod music(over 9,000 songs), but didn’t have enough room on my current external HD for it. Plus I just like the idea of keeping my music separate from my work documents and photos etc. I had originally thought of backing up my music to rewritable cds. But really, not only would that take hundreds of discs, but a huge chunk of time and effort. With an external hard drive, it’s as simple as a drag and drop. No time wasted. Having a backup system like this might sway me into letting go of the zillions of cds I have cluttering up space.

With this easy to use hard drive, you’ll have no worries about your documents, music or photos getting lost in a computer crash. A must have for anyone.

The portable hard drive is amazing in it’s size, a mere 4-1/4″L x 2-7/8″W x 1/2″ thick. It comes with a usb connector and you simply connect it to the hard drive and the usb end to your computer and you can use it to transfer files, backup, save pictures etc. I was amazed at how such a small item could hold so much and make computer use so fast and easy. Moving anything to is is instantaneous. You can actually drag/drop files and pics. My life is certainly simpler now and I plan on buying another one. The package includes:

    Acclaim hard drive

    USB cable

Nero BackitUp Essentials backup software (included on hard drive)

Turbo USB Software (included on hard drive)

Quick links to eMusic and Norton Online Backup (included on hard drive)

    Quickstart quide.

    System requirements are:

    USB port

    Windows 7, Vista, XP

Mac OS x 10.1 or higher

Comes with a 7 year limited warranty – Highly recommend!

Mine is a 500 GB. When I FIRST CONNECTED the drive to an EXTENDED USB cable (b/c the included cable is too short), the drive kept making ticking sound (tic tic tic tic). I was so worry and kept thinking that the drive might be defective. However, when I tried to connect the drive directly to the USB port of the case (not through an EXTENDED USB cable), Windows just recognized the drive instantly! SO, THOSE PEOPLE HAVING TICKING SOUND (I see many complain about this on the internet) WHEN TRYING TO CONNECT THE HDD SHOULD TRY TO CONNECT IT DIRECTLY TO THE USB PORT OF THE CASE. Also, people who complaint about their drive not being recognized by Windows after some times using it should know that when you disconnect the hdd, you MUST use the function Safely Remove Hardware of Windows. If you just disconnect the drive by unplugging the usb cable without ejecting it through Safely Remove Hardware first, the drive may still usable after the first time doing it but will die eventually after 3 or 4 times doing so. I have used many flash drives and portable hdd and I’ve encounter this problem many times.

    P/s:

    * Tips for copying files to flash drives/portable drives faster:

    - When moving large amount of small files (such as 100+ files and each files is ~ 1mb), ZIP or COMPRESS the files into 1 zip/rar file first, then move the large zipped file will be VERY MUCH faster. One time,I copied 3000+ files (each file is < 1MB) to my Kingmax 4gb flash drive and it just froze when copying halfway. Then I tried to remove it through Safely Remove Hardware but couldn't, and I just unplugged the drive -> Guess what? Windows couldn’t recognize the drive the next time I plugged it in -> the drive was absolutely death.

    - Transferring files from HDD to the portable drive is always slower than transferring files from the portable drive to HDD.

    * You should reformat the drive using NTFS system.

    * Also, remember that all commercial HDDs/flash drives’ capacity is calculating base on 1gb = 1,000,000,000 bytes (not 1gb = 1024*1024*1024 = 1,073,741,824 bytes in Windows). So the actual capacity of the 500gb verbatim is actually 465gbs.

    Pros:

    - Very small (less than palm size) with glossy surface.

    - Fast transferring speed (average 30Mb/s when copying a 4.7gb file from hdd sata 2 Western Digital Caviar Black to Verbatim drive).

    - Quiet operation (hardly hear any sound when the drive is running).

    Cons:

    - Extremely short cable (mini USB to standard USB).

    - Attract finger prints easily.
